A highly sought-after player is expected to be one of the most talked-about names in free agency this offseason, with two teams reportedly vying for his signature.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox are both showing interest. The Tigers are looking to sign this star third baseman, which would allow him to reunite with manager A.J. Hinch from their time together in Houston. However, he may come with a high price tag for Detroit. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have made inquiries and could be a good match if they decide to move Rafael Devers to first base.
Last season, this player posted a .260/.315/.453 batting line with 26 home runs, earning his first Gold Glove award. Over his career, he has been named an All-Star twice, won a Silver Slugger, and played a pivotal role in his team’s World Series triumphs in 2017 and 2022.
Represented by renowned agent Scott Boras, he is reportedly aiming for a deal comparable to the 11-year, $ 350 million contract earned by San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado.
Does Alex Bregman make sense for the Detroit Tigers or Boston Red Sox?
Although the Tigers appear to be an ideal match for Bregman, considering their current roster and his connection with Tigers manager A.J. Hinch—who previously managed him with the Houston Astros—he might be seeking a salary that is too high.
The Tigers mainly utilized a combination of Matt Vierling and Zach McKinstry at third base, both of whom are versatile enough to play multiple positions. If the Tigers can secure enough funds to present Bregman with a competitive offer, it would be hard to find a better fit for him elsewhere in baseball. Bregman would not only bring Gold Glove-level defense to a key position and a reliable bat to the lineup, but he would also serve as a valued veteran presence on one of the youngest teams in the Major Leagues, having won two World Series championships.
According to Heyman, Bregman might not fit as seamlessly into the Red Sox roster compared to the Tigers. However, if current third baseman Rafael Devers were to switch to a different position and the Red Sox traded their current first baseman Triston Casas, Bregman could seamlessly return to his natural position. Another possibility is for Bregman to transition to second base, where the Red Sox are actively seeking an upgrade.
At the GM meetings, Boras mentioned that Bregman would be open to the idea of moving to second base. If that’s the case, it could provide the Red Sox with a way to integrate Bregman into their roster without necessitating changes in other positions or any trades.
