Mark Few Commends Gonzaga’s Defensive Effort: ‘The Guys Are Playing with Great Intensity’
The Gonzaga Bulldogs, known for their offensive prowess, have impressed defensively in recent wins against San Diego State and Long Beach State. Historically, Gonzaga has been a powerhouse offensively, ranking in the top five for offensive efficiency over the past six seasons, including four No. 1 finishes. This season, they are averaging 93.2 points per game, maintaining their offensive dominance. However, head coach Mark Few was quick to highlight the team’s strong defensive performances, especially after limiting Long Beach State to a season-low 41 points and following up their gritty effort at San Diego State.
“I think we had a really great week on the defensive end, and the offense just kept coming along,” Few commented after their 84-81 victory over Long Beach State. “We had a great defensive effort overall, with just a small lapse towards the end of the first half. The guys are playing hard, showing great physicality, and we were disciplined in the way we played.”
Gonzaga’s defensive improvements have been noticeable, as their defensive efficiency has surged from No. 33 to No. 17 in the nation since their games against San Diego State and Long Beach State. Few praised his team’s intensity in contesting shots, especially limiting Long Beach State to just 2-of-20 from beyond the arc. “We did a better job getting over screens and contesting shots,” Few added. “We played clean defense, and our discipline was key, especially against their guards who are great at drawing fouls.”
The Bulldogs have maintained solid defensive focus since their opening-night win over No. 8 Baylor, where they held the Bears to 37.1% shooting from the field and just 14.3% from three-point range. Gonzaga’s defensive improvements come alongside a deep, experienced roster, with six seniors in the rotation. This depth, along with the team’s high continuity from last season, has contributed to their physicality, which has stood up well against tough competition.
If Gonzaga can continue this level of defensive commitment, they could solidify their status as national title contenders. Historically, every NCAA champion since 1997 has ranked in the top 20 for defensive efficiency, with only one team—2009-10 North Carolina—coming close to breaking that trend. Under Mark Few, Gonzaga has finished in the top 20 for defense seven times, and those teams have consistently made deep runs in the NCAA Tournament, including two Final Four appearances.
