The Texas Rangers re-signed two players from their 2023 World Series championship team who are coming off disappointing seasons in 2024.
The Texas Rangers still have plenty to address, but they took a small step toward meeting their pitching needs by re-signing two familiar faces.
The team inked a one-year, 2.66milliondealwithastarterwhocanalsoserveasalongreliever.Thiscontractincludesperformancebonuses,accordingtoMLBNetwork′sJonHeyman.Thenewdealrepresentsa20 3.25 million for 2024. Approaching his 30th birthday in December, he recorded a 5.31 ERA over 95 innings in 26 appearances, including 15 starts, finishing the season with a 5-7 record and 91 strikeouts. In the prior year, he led the Rangers with 172 2/3 innings pitched, boasting a 12-7 record and a 3.70 ERA across 35 appearances, 26 of which were starts.
He was sent down to Triple-A Round Rock late in the season.
Under the MLB collective bargaining agreement, teams cannot offer contracts to current players that are more than 20% lower than their previous deal.
The reliever, who faced shoulder problems throughout the 2024 season, signed a one-year, $ 1.1 million contract, slightly increasing his prior salary. He underwent a debridement procedure on his right shoulder in Los Angeles on November 13. This procedure involves cleaning the wound and removing thickened skin, infected tissue, and any foreign debris, as described by healthline.com.
The Rangers are hopeful that he will be ready to pitch in the first half of the 2025 season. In 2024, he posted a 3.86 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings. The previous year, he tallied 66 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings while contributing to the Rangers’ inaugural World Series victory.
