Over the weekend, Arizona State celebrated a victory over BYU, resulting in a massive rush onto the field as thousands of fans flooded in after the “win.” However, officials noticed that there was still one second left on the clock, giving the Cougars one last chance for a Hail Mary play. This created a memorable situation for Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham, who managed to stay composed amid the excitement. Once the fans were cleared from the field, BYU’s final attempt failed, allowing Arizona State to secure the win.
Shortly after the game, however, the Sun Devils found out they would face repercussions for the field storming incident. On Tuesday morning, the Big 12 announced a “public reprimand” and imposed a $ 250 fine on the university, citing the need to uphold the conference’s standards of sportsmanship.
Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark highlighted the importance of safety, stating, “The safety of student-athletes and all game participants is our foremost priority.” He added that the conference would continue to work with member schools to enhance event management.
With this victory, Arizona State improved its record to 9-2, defying predictions that they would finish last in the Big 12 according to the preseason media poll. If they win against Arizona this weekend, they will clinch a spot in the Big 12 championship game, and a victory there could put them in contention for the College Football Playoff.
