In line with the Big 12 Conference’s Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship, Arizona State University has received a public reprimand and a $ 25,000 fine following the field storming incident that took place during their recent football game against BYU.
“The safety of student-athletes and all game participants is our top priority,” stated Commissioner Brett Yormark. “We will continue collaborating with our institutions on event management policies at all Big 12 venues.”
The official reprimand and fine come after a chaotic scene unfolded during the game, where fans rushed the field prematurely, believing the game had concluded, despite one second still remaining on the clock. This disruption not only interfered with the game’s conclusion but also resulted in a lengthy delay as officials reviewed the play.
Arizona State managed to secure a thrilling 28-23 victory, but the excitement was somewhat marred by the field invasion. As quarterback Sam Leavitt attempted to run out the clock with a fourth-down throw out of bounds, fans flooded onto the field, prompting officials to review the situation and prolonging the game by over ten minutes.
