After being traded to the Minnesota Vikings, Daniel Jones is focused on growing and contributing to the team’s offense.
“I think you’re always looking to grow, improve, and work on your craft,” Jones said, as reported by ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. “You want to see where you can get better and pick up on certain things. So yeah, I’m looking forward to that, but more than anything, I just want to help out, be part of a good quarterback room, and be part of a good offense to see where I can make a contribution.”
Jones, who was released by the New York Giants last week after being demoted, spent his first day with the Vikings on Friday.
Before the trade, Jones appeared in 10 games this season, throwing for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
He signed a one-year deal with the Vikings’ practice squad, where he will spend the remainder of the season learning from starter Sam Darnold, who is having a career year, and the team’s experienced quarterback coaches.
Jones acknowledged that he will need to dedicate considerable time to understanding the new offensive system, as it’s unfamiliar to him, according to Seifert.
Currently, backup quarterback Nick Mullens and third-stringer Brett Rypien are Coach Kevin O’Connell’s preferred options following the season-ending injury to J.J. McCarthy. For Jones to see playing time, a series of events would need to take place.
“You’re really doing two things at once,” O’Connell said, according to Seifert. “You’re laying the foundation for the long term, but at the same time, we’re focused on making sure Daniel is ready to step in if needed, so we’re not wasting time on the present and making sure he’s prepared.”
