Over the past four or five years, the Los Angeles Dodgers have secured more free-agent signings and contract extensions than many teams typically achieve over a decade or more. Following their victory in the 2024 World Series, the Dodgers are sending a clear message that they are not done yet and are looking to build a dynasty.

“BREAKING: Superutility player Tommy Edman and the Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a five-year, 74millioncontractextension,sourcestellESPN.Thedealcovers2025−29andincludesasixth−yearcluboption.Itfeaturesa74millioncontractextension,sourcestellESPN.Thedealcovers2025−29andincludesasixth−yearcluboption.Itfeaturesa 17 million signing bonus and deferred payments,” MLB insider Jeff Passan reported on X.

As is typical for the Dodgers, the contract includes a $ 17 million signing bonus and deferred payments to help lower his Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) impact. Edman, who was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals this year, has quickly become a key contributor to the team since joining the roster.

Edman has been incredibly valuable in his role with the Dodgers

Edman spent several months recovering from surgery on his right wrist but still managed to deliver his usual skills and offensive output for the Dodgers. In 37 games, he recorded a .237/.294/.417 batting average, hitting six home runs and stealing six bases, with an OPS of .711, which is close to his career average of .726.

Edman’s greatest strength is his versatility; he can effectively play multiple positions. In 2024, he took the field at second base, shortstop, and center field, and throughout his MLB career, he has also played third base and both corner outfield positions.

He won a Gold Glove award at second base in 2021 and was named the National League Championship Series (NLCS) MVP for his outstanding performance that led the Dodgers to the World Series against the New York Yankees.

Overall, Edman secured a life-changing contract, and the Dodgers gained a valuable utility player with great defensive skills, speed, some power, and impressive versatility. It’s a beneficial arrangement for everyone involved.
