The New York Jets are reportedly viewing Aaron Rodgers as a ‘long shot’ to be their quarterback next season, according to claims made by NFL reporter Ian Rapoport. He shared this revelation just two hours before the Jets were set to resume their season against the Seattle Seahawks following a bye week.
During his segment on NFL GameDay, Rapoport noted, “Will Aaron Rodgers be the Jets’ quarterback in 2025? Considering the financials: there’s no guaranteed money, but they do have to pay him a $ 35 million option bonus if they choose to keep him. As of now, it seems that Rodgers is seen as unlikely to return to the Jets.”
Further discussions are expected with the team’s new leadership after the season, but that’s the current situation. If Rodgers were to part ways with the Jets, the 40-year-old quarterback would face a significant decision regarding his career moving forward.
Earlier this week, during an appearance on the Pat McAfee show, Rodgers expressed that his top choice is to continue playing in New York after this season ends.
“I haven’t told anyone in my life that I want to play in 2025 elsewhere than the Jets,” Rodgers stated on the ESPN program with McAfee and his crew. “That is completely untrue; in fact, I’ve said the opposite. I’m going to see what happens at the end of the season and determine if they want me back.”
Rodgers shared that he’s really enjoyed his time in New York, acknowledging that the team’s success hasn’t met everyone’s hopes but emphasizing the great friendships he’s formed on the team and his enjoyment of living in Jersey. “I’m not even sure if I want to keep playing yet, but New York would be my first choice,” he added.
The Jets are currently in search of a new head coach and general manager, two roles that will likely play a significant role in shaping Aaron Rodgers’ future with the team.
Robert Saleh was dismissed as head coach earlier this season, and Jeff Ulbrich has stepped in on an interim basis for the remainder of the year.
Additionally, Joe Douglas has also been let go as the Jets’ general manager, indicating that there will be considerable changes in the offseason, regardless of what happens with Rodgers.
As the Jets head into Sunday’s game against the Seahawks, who are leading the NFC West, they are sitting at a record of 3-8. A win is crucial for them to maintain their slim chances of making the playoffs.
