The Philadelphia Phillies recently concluded the season with a 95-67 record, capturing the National League East title for the first time since 2011. However, after a disappointing early exit from the postseason, the team may be looking to make significant roster changes. There’s speculation that such moves could potentially bring Houston Astros star Alex Bregman to Philadelphia. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski stated he is open to finding ways to improve the team for 2025.
“The reality is, we have a lot of good players,” he said on Oct. 15, according to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. “We need to be open-minded about exploring what’s available, talking to some clubs, and seeing what unfolds. That process hasn’t begun yet. Sometimes good players get traded for other good players.”
The third base position is one area likely to see changes. Alec Bohm enjoyed a stellar 2024 season, driving in a career-high 97 runs and earning his first All-Star selection. However, he struggled in the NLDS against the New York Mets, posting a .220 OPS in 14 plate appearances. With trade rumors surrounding him this offseason, Bohm’s potential exit could leave a void at third base for the Phillies.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report believes the Phillies could be a strong candidate to land Alex Bregman through free agency, alongside other likely contenders such as the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers. For the Phillies, trading Alec Bohm for Bregman appears to be a logical step, especially given their ambitions for the 2025 season. Bregman, a two-time champion with 99 postseason games played since 2016, would significantly enhance the team. Although signing him would require a hefty investment—Tim Britton of The Athletic estimates a seven-year, $ 189 million deal for the 30-year-old—the Phillies are probably prepared to make that financial commitment in pursuit of their first World Series title since 2008.
