The Philadelphia Phillies may not receive the return they hope for in trade talks involving their All-Star third baseman, Alec Bohm.
There has been significant attention surrounding the Phillies’ potential decision to trade Bohm. While moving him isn’t necessarily the wrong choice, it comes with some uncertainties.
The Phillies are not in a position to focus on acquiring prospects; their primary goal is to strengthen their major league roster. While some teams might consider trading a proven MLB player for Bohm, even if that player isn’t as promising, many still recognize the high potential of Bohm, a former third overall pick. However, at 28 years old, it’s becoming clear that what you see is likely what you get with him.
Bohm doesn’t stand out offensively or defensively, and while that might not impress everyone, it doesn’t diminish the fact that he’s a solid, above-average player who could thrive with a new team.
Playing in Philadelphia can be tough, and Bohm certainly understands that. The Phillies’ main question is what kind of trade package they can expect for him. Are they aiming to send him to a team that’s also in win-now mode, or do they hope to package him with some prospects in exchange for a superstar player?
Both scenarios are possible outcomes. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, teams view Bohm as a “good but not great player,” citing his strong start in 2024 followed by a dip in performance. Bohm finished the season with a solid .280/.332/.448 slash line and 15 home runs, but his 117 OPS+ was his best in any season where he played more than 44 games, suggesting his value is at its peak since his prospect days.
While it’s unclear if teams will offer a player who fills a pressing need for the Phillies, Bohm should still attract interest from several teams.
