When Mack Brown was let go from his position as head coach of the UNC football program, many anticipated that several current players would choose to enter the transfer portal. As the number of players making this move increases, the latest addition is one of the most significant so far.
Quarterback Conner Harrell shared on social media that he will be exploring new options this offseason. The sophomore from Alabaster, Alabama has two seasons of eligibility left.
After serving as the backup to Drake Maye last season, Harrell entered training camp competing for the starting position. Although Max Johnson secured the role, he suffered a season-ending injury in the Tar Heels’ opener, leading to Harrell stepping into the starting lineup.
Unfortunately, Harrell faced challenges during his time as a starter, prompting the Tar Heels to turn to Jacolby Criswell to lead the offense.
In six games, the sophomore completed 21 of 37 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, he contributed as a runner, amassing 55 rushing yards and another touchdown on the ground.
Regrettably, Harrell did not meet expectations during his limited appearances and struggled to reclaim the starting quarterback position. Now, he plans to continue his college football career elsewhere, as he possesses significant untapped potential that could benefit from a change in environment.
