Why the Falcons Have Strong Confidence in Kirk Cousins
Despite coming off one of the toughest stretches of his 13-year career, the Falcons remain fully supportive of Kirk Cousins.
Cousins has struggled in recent games, failing to throw a touchdown in three straight outings, and throwing six interceptions during that span. With a highly drafted backup quarterback and a 1-6 record when Cousins’ passer rating is under 90, there’s no shortage of reasons to question his performance. However, the Falcons’ coaching staff and teammates are unwavering in their belief that Cousins can bounce back.
“Kirk’s ready to go,” said head coach Raheem Morris. “He’s been through plenty of tough games in his career, and while this one was rough, he’s built for moments like this and he’s ready to keep pushing forward.”
Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson echoed this sentiment, pointing out Cousins’ experience and resilience. “He’s been through highs and lows, but he keeps swinging and getting back to work,” Robinson noted.
Even Cousins’ backup, Michael Penix Jr., showed his faith in the veteran quarterback, saying, “He’s been in so many situations throughout his career, and he knows that last game wasn’t his best. He’ll be better, and we all believe in him.”
The consistent theme here is that Cousins’ career journey is why everyone has confidence in him. Throughout his career, he’s faced adversity and had to prove himself time and time again.
Cousins’ determination was tested early, from a high school injury that threatened his college aspirations to being a third-string quarterback at Michigan State, and then a fourth-round pick behind Heisman winner Robert Griffin III with the Washington Redskins. His struggles continued in his early NFL years, including being benched in his third season and facing a critical moment in his fourth year when a loss would have likely sidelined him for a long time.
But Cousins responded in spectacular fashion. In a pivotal game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with Washington trailing 24-0, he led a historic comeback, throwing for 317 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winner. That performance, capped by his now-famous “You like that?” celebration, cemented his reputation for rising to the occasion.
This pattern of bouncing back has become a hallmark of Cousins’ career. While some might view it as a sign of resilience, others may argue that it highlights his repeated struggles. Nonetheless, it’s clear that Cousins has repeatedly proven his ability to overcome adversity.
Now, in the midst of a three-game losing streak, the Falcons are counting on him to rise once again. “In this league, you get knocked down, but you’ve got to get back up,” Cousins said, reflecting on his journey. “I’m in that position again, but I’ll keep pushing.”
With playoff hopes and a division title still on the line, the Falcons are relying on Cousins to once again prove his resilience and lead them forward.
