Mountain West Commissioner Says Boise State and UNLV Both Deserve CFP Bye

As No. 10 Boise State prepares to face No. 20 UNLV for the Mountain West championship on Friday, the possibility of a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff (CFP) is on the line. A victory for Boise State would likely secure them a spot in the Fiesta Bowl, while a loss would raise questions, especially since UNLV came close to defeating the Broncos earlier in the season, falling 29-24 in October.

Mountain West commissioner Gloria Nevarez weighed in on the matter Thursday, stating that both Boise State and UNLV deserve a bye in the CFP, regardless of the outcome of Friday’s game. “Whoever wins the conference, they deserve a bye,” Nevarez told reporters, including Shaun Goodwin of the Idaho Statesman.

While Nevarez’s comments are relatively restrained compared to other college football politicking, they highlight the strong seasons both teams have had. Boise State is in a solid position, but for UNLV, the path to a bye may be tougher. The Rebels would likely need to surpass teams like No. 15 Arizona State, No. 16 Iowa State, or No. 17 Clemson, depending on Saturday’s results.

In any case, it’s been a much-needed positive season for the Mountain West as it faces an uncertain future.
