The Boston Red Sox are seeking a right-handed power hitter to balance their talented lineup of left-handed hitters this offseason.
Alex Bregman’s name first surfaced as a potential target in a report by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic towards the end of the 2024 regular season. Bregman would make sense for the team, providing both a formidable right-handed bat and improved defense at third base. However, the key concern for Boston is whether they can afford him, especially given their urgent need to invest in pitching this winter.
Initial reports indicated that Bregman might command a contract in the $ 250 million range, which seemed unrealistic for the Red Sox. Nevertheless, a more recent report may work to Boston’s advantage.
According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, the Astros have proposed a five-year, 156millioncontracttoBregman,althoughthethirdbasemanisreportedlyaimingforadealcloserto 200 million. Both figures make a potential trade for Bregman more feasible for the Red Sox.
Acquiring Bregman would help address several critical needs for Boston. His defensive skills, combined with Trevor Story, would strengthen an infield that has faced challenges defensively over the last two seasons.
Offensively, he would provide balance to the lineup and bring championship experience as a two-time World Series champion. With the MLB Winter Meetings set for December 9-12 in Dallas, the Red Sox might re-open negotiations for the 30-year-old star.
