Sean Manaea developed a strong connection with the Mets, so much so that he referred to the 2024 season as the “best of my career” during his final press conference after the team was eliminated by the Dodgers in Game 6 of the ALCS.
After Luis Severino signed a three-year, $ 67 million contract with the A’s, WFAN host Evan Roberts urged the Mets to focus on keeping Manaea.
“I think part of that is emotional,” Roberts acknowledged via Audacy. “He became our ace last year… We’ve formed a bond with him. I recognize there’s some risk involved… but Sean Manaea is someone I would be willing to invest significant money and years in.”
Manaea, similar to Severino, declined the Mets’ 21.05millionqualifyingoffer.Severinobenefitedfromhisdecisionwithacontractaveraging 23.33 million annually, indicating that Manaea might secure an even larger deal. A four-year contract for Manaea could exceed $ 90 million in total value.
After adjusting his arm slot in August, Manaea stepped up as the Mets’ ace, finishing the season with a 2.63 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts over his last 11 starts. In the postseason, he recorded a 2-1 record with a 4.74 ERA over 19 innings.
Looking back on the season, Manaea expressed in October, “I’m really proud of the effort I’ve put in with everyone here, both on and off the field. Overall, I’m just really proud of the year.”
