Mississippi State gets massive prediction to land coveted quarterback out of transfer portal

One college football analyst is predicting a reunion between Jeff Lebby and one of his former quarterbacks.

Mississippi State football is making strides in the transfer portal as they work to rebuild their roster following a dismal 2-10 season. Most of the focus is expected to be on improving the defense, which struggled significantly in 2023. However, the offense is also a priority, even at positions where the Bulldogs already seem relatively strong.

This includes the quarterback position, where Mississippi State has received a prediction to acquire one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the transfer portal.

On3 college football analyst and transfer portal expert Pete Nakos has predicted that former Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold will transfer to Mississippi State. Currently, Nakos holds a 50% confidence level that Arnold, who has two years of eligibility left, will make his way to Starkville.

Jackson Arnold was one of the top quarterback recruits in the nation as he came out of high school. The Denton, TX native was rated as a 99-overall 5-star prospect in the class of 2023. He committed to the Sooners under former Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, who is now the head coach at Mississippi State. As a backup quarterback during his true freshman season in 2023, Arnold received considerable playing time under Lebby’s coaching.

Arnold’s 2024 season with Oklahoma was a mixed bag; he went from being the starter to losing the job and then reclaiming it again. The schematic changes in Norman, coupled with injuries affecting the Sooner offense, contributed to his challenges. Nevertheless, he is extremely talented, and reports indicate that he has a strong rapport with Lebby.

While defense is the Bulldogs’ primary focus, Jeff Lebby is also looking to secure another quarterback from the transfer portal. When Jackson Arnold’s name came up as a possible candidate for Mississippi State a few days ago, many Bulldog fans dismissed the idea, citing the strong presence of Michael Van Buren at quarterback and the critical need for defensive talent. However, while there hasn’t been much official word from Starkville regarding their interest in Arnold, it wouldn’t be surprising if he ends up there.

Yes, defense is the top priority, but the Bulldogs could benefit from another quarterback. There’s no certainty that both Michael Van Buren and Blake Shapen will return next season, and KaMario Taylor looks to redshirt. It’s important to have as many talented options as possible in the quarterback room. If Jeff Lebby, who knows Arnold well, believes that adding him could enhance the team, pursuing him makes sense.

Of course, it’s crucial for MSU to avoid overspending on NIL deals for a position that isn’t the immediate concern. However, quarterback is the most critical position on the field, and having a player like Jackson Arnold could significantly strengthen the team.
