The Jacksonville Jaguars are entering a rebuilding phase for the 2025 season, which will involve moving on from older players with large contracts. In 2024, they began this process by trading former franchise left tackle Cam Robinson to Minnesota and promoting 25-year-old Walker Little, who was drafted 45th overall in 2021. Jacksonville recently secured Little with a three-year, $40.5 million contract extension, keeping him with the team through 2027.
One veteran the Jaguars chose not to trade at the deadline is starting right guard Brandon Scherff. The five-time Pro Bowler, who will turn 33 shortly after Christmas, is expected to seek a move to a contending team in 2025 for one final shot at a playoff run. In his AFC scouting reports for Week 15, Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report predicted Scherff would leave Jacksonville’s rebuild and join the NFC powerhouse Philadelphia Eagles.
Ballentine suggested that Philadelphia, which has several impending free agents on the interior offensive line, including current starting right guard Mekhi Becton, could benefit from adding Scherff. While Scherff may not be the player he once was, his experience and five Pro Bowls make him a valuable asset, providing the Eagles with a solid veteran option. Scherff, who has only played in four playoff games in his career, might be willing to take a pay cut to join a Super Bowl contender after a challenging season in Jacksonville.
This offseason, Eagles GM Howie Roseman faces decisions regarding the right guard position. He must decide whether to re-sign standout starter Becton, who has impressed in his move inside from tackle, let Becton walk and turn to young backup Tyler Steen, or bring in another veteran like Scherff on a short-term deal. Currently, the most likely scenario is an extension for Becton, who has played the best football of his career this season and expressed his appreciation for Philadelphia since joining in March. While Scherff remains a strong starter, Becton, at 25, offers more long-term potential.
The Eagles also have other contract extensions to consider, including linebacker Zack Baun and defensive tackle Milton Williams, and it’s possible that those discussions will take precedence over Becton’s situation. However, Roseman has emphasized the importance of building through the trenches, and given Becton’s strong performance this year, he is expected to be a priority for the Eagles.
