Evaluating Progress-Insights as Broncos are aiming for much more than a winning season, Payton says
The Denver Broncos are focused on more than just finishing with a winning record, says head coach Sean Payton.
The team, with an 8-5 record, is on the brink of securing its first winning season in eight years, but Payton isn’t overly concerned with that milestone. “I don’t think anyone, including myself, is just thinking about having a winning season,” Payton remarked during a media call after the team’s bye week. “Our goals are set higher.”
The Broncos are aiming for a playoff spot, something they haven’t achieved since their Super Bowl victory in 2015. With four games left in the regular season, Denver holds a two-game advantage over both the 6-7 Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins for the AFC’s final wild card spot. The Broncos are also tied with the 8-5 Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers for the 5th and 6th playoff positions, although they currently lose the tiebreaker to both teams based on head-to-head results.
The next few weeks are crucial, starting with a home game against the Colts. A win against Indianapolis, followed by a game at the Chargers, could help resolve tiebreaker issues. The Broncos will then travel to Cincinnati, with their season finale at home against the Kansas City Chiefs, who have already secured the AFC West title.
Payton emphasized the importance of cutting down on self-inflicted errors. “Our penalty numbers are still a problem,” he said, highlighting the offensive line and secondary as areas needing improvement to avoid costly mistakes.
Other topics discussed by Payton included the decision to release wide receiver Josh Reynolds, who was quickly claimed by Jacksonville, and the Broncos’ defensive breakdowns in their last game against the Cleveland Browns. Payton acknowledged mistakes in both defensive strategy and overall team execution, particularly in the secondary where veteran Levi Wallace struggled to cover Browns’ receiver Jerry Jeudy. If starting cornerback Riley Moss remains sidelined due to a knee injury, Payton may turn to Wallace, rookie Kris Abrams-Draine, or Damarri Mathis to step in.
Payton praised Abrams-Draine, noting his football IQ and physical development. He also mentioned the rookie’s solid performance in special teams and his overall contribution in his first NFL game.
