Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has defended linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair following his ejection from Sunday’s game for delivering a late hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Ryans expressed his support for the six-year player on Monday, stating that the incident should be viewed from both perspectives. He emphasized that the team’s intention was never to injure anyone, but he believes there may be an overreaction when injuries occur.
Ryans explained that quarterbacks often exploit rules by sliding late to gain extra yards, putting the onus on defenders in those situations. He acknowledged Lawrence’s injury, wishing him a quick recovery, but also stressed that when quarterbacks slide or go out of bounds, they need to do so properly to avoid putting defenders in difficult positions.
A league source told CNN’s Coy Wire that the NFL is considering suspending Al-Shaair. The league typically reviews such hits for potential disciplinary action, taking into account any prior violations. Al-Shaair had been fined $11,255 for a late hit against the Tennessee Titans on November 24 and $11,817 for punching a player in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears.
Ryans defended Al-Shaair’s playing style, stating he plays the game “the right way” and would never intentionally harm another player. He rejected the notion that Al-Shaair is a “dirty player” and stressed that his physical style of play can sometimes be misinterpreted in today’s game.
On Monday, Al-Shaair issued an apology to Lawrence for the hit, explaining that he didn’t see Lawrence sliding until it was too late. He also addressed the racist and Islamophobic abuse he had received, stating that he would never intentionally hurt any player and that the comments about his character were unjustified.
Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson was also asked about a potential punishment for Al-Shaair, referencing the escalating incidents in college football over the weekend. Pederson called for the NFL to address these issues and minimize such plays in the future, while maintaining the league’s high standards.
The Texans are currently on a bye week and will return to action on December 15 against the Miami Dolphins.
