New York Jets running back Breece Hall might return to play on Sunday at Jacksonville after sitting out a game due to a knee injury.
Hall has been dealing with a hyperextension and an MCL injury in his left knee, which caused him to miss last Sunday’s game against Miami. However, he fully participated in Friday’s practice after sitting out on Wednesday and Thursday. Hall is listed as questionable on the team’s final injury report.
“He looks good right now,” said interim coach Jeff Ulbrich. “So it’s promising.”
Hall leads the Jets with 692 rushing yards and four touchdowns, along with 401 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 46 receptions. With Hall sidelined last weekend, rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis stepped in. Allen rushed for 43 yards on 11 carries, while Davis gained 40 yards on 10 carries, scoring his first rushing touchdown.
“We’re hopeful and we’ll see how it goes,” Ulbrich added regarding Hall’s status.
The Jets will also welcome back star cornerback Sauce Gardner, who missed a game due to a hamstring injury. However, cornerback D.J. Reed is expected to be out with a groin injury. Reed, listed as doubtful, missed practice on Thursday and Friday.
“It’s been something that’s flared up here and there,” Ulbrich said. “It gets aggravated, then it eases up, and then it flares up again. So, we’re just managing it.”
With backup Brandin Echols sidelined by a shoulder injury, veteran Isaiah Oliver or rookie Qwan’tez Stiggers could start alongside Gardner if Reed is unable to play. Kendall Sheffield might also be called up from the practice squad for the second week in a row.
Ulbrich also announced that kick returner Kene Nwangwu will be placed on injured reserve after breaking his hand in last weekend’s game against Miami. This injury comes just a week after Nwangwu was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and forced fumble in a loss to Seattle.
“To have him out there with a broken hand just wouldn’t be productive for him or for us as a team, so it’s unfortunate that it cuts his season short,” Ulbrich said. “He’s been a bright light, and I believe he has an incredible future in this league. He’s already been a very good player for a while, so it’s unfortunate, but he’ll be back.”
Offensive lineman Xavier Newman (groin) is doubtful, while right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) and right tackle Morgan Moses (wrist) are listed as questionable.
