The Detroit Tigers wrapped up the Winter Meetings without making any significant changes this offseason.
The 2024 season was notable for the Tigers as they finally ended a long playoff drought in a year when few anticipated such success. Tarik Skubal’s outstanding performance, which earned him the Cy Young Award, along with a dependable bullpen, fueled the team’s impressive run.
Having exceeded expectations last season, the Tigers now have the opportunity to enhance their strong young core, which has already shown its potential to compete.
As the offseason began, one of the team’s primary goals was to secure a veteran bat for the middle of their lineup. Although they haven’t made that addition yet, there are still many options available, leaving the door open for a future acquisition.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently forecasted that the Tigers could make a significant move by signing Alex Bregman to a substantial eight-year, $ 216 million deal.
“The Tigers are still seen as a strong choice here, not just due to the AJ Hinch connection. They have ample budget space to make a significant addition, and just one major bat along with one solid pitcher could elevate them from being a scrappy playoff underdog to the top contender in the AL Central.”
After a recent trade that sent Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for two players who could meet both short-term and long-term needs at third base for the Houston Astros, it appears more likely that Alex Bregman may be heading out of Houston.
At 30 years old, Bregman has established himself as one of the league’s premier third basemen and is now looking for a contract that reflects his elite status.
Bregman would be a perfect fit for the Tigers, providing a right-handed bat to occupy the middle of their lineup. Along with his offensive skills, he offers Gold Glove-caliber defense and extensive playoff experience, which could be crucial in guiding Detroit’s young roster through postseason challenges.
Although he may come with a hefty price tag, Bregman could be the key factor that turns the Tigers into a playoff team and a genuine World Series contender. With his time in Houston likely drawing to a close, Detroit should certainly be a strong candidate to land him.
