A college football team is pulling out of its bowl game due to the loss of over 25 players to the transfer portal this week.

As reported by college football insider Ross Dellenger, the Marshall Thundering Herd have opted out of their matchup against Army. This decision came after a significant number of players transferred following the team’s decision not to renew head coach Charles Huff’s contract.

“Marshall has informed officials that it will not participate in the Independence Bowl against Army,” sources told @YahooSports. “With no 6-6 teams available, officials are working to identify a replacement by evaluating the NCAA APR scores of 5-7 teams. Marshall has lost more than 25 players to the portal,” Dellenger reported.

“The initial Independence Bowl involved two American teams because Army had a prior commitment to participate before they joined the league this year,” the report added.

New head coach Tony Gibson recently met with the team and is hopeful of keeping some players who have entered the transfer portal. He recognizes that transferring can be an emotional decision for young athletes.

“Whenever coaches leave for other jobs, it tends to be an emotional situation,” Gibson said during a news conference on Thursday, according to ESPN. “Young athletes, typically aged 18 to 22, often make choices driven by emotion rather than taking the time to reflect.”

As Army gets ready for one of college football’s premier rivalry games this afternoon, the team is eagerly anticipating news about their new opponent for the bowl game.
