Major Discoveries as Red Wings’ Jonatan Berggren fined for cross-check on Maple Leafs’ Connor Dewar
Jonatan Berggren of the Detroit Red Wings has been penalized by the National Hockey League for cross-checking Connor Dewar, a forward for the Maple Leafs.
The incident occurred on Saturday night at 10:53 during the second period of the Red Wings’ 4-2 victory. Berggren received a minor penalty for his actions, but Dewar was unharmed and continued playing at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
On Sunday morning, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Berggren has been fined $ 2,148.44 USD, which is the highest amount allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.
The fine will be directed to the players’ emergency assistance fund.
The Maple Leafs capitalized on Berggren’s minor penalty, with Mitch Marner assisting Auston Matthews for his 10th goal of the season.
Toronto is returning home for a rare Sunday afternoon matchup, with the puck drop at Scotiabank Arena scheduled for just after 5 p.m.
So far this season, Toronto holds a 3-2-1 record in the second game of back-to-back matchups. Meanwhile, Buffalo, which lost 4-2 to the Capitals in Washington on Saturday night before heading to Toronto, has a record of 1-4-0 in such scenarios.
Historically, the Leafs have a 4-6-0 record in their last 10 games against the Sabres.
More importantly, Toronto will aim to exploit a Buffalo team that hasn’t won since November 23, struggling with a 0-6-3 record in their last 10 games.
The Leafs currently boast an NHL-leading 13 victories at home (13-4-0), while the Sabres have a 5-6-1 record on the road.
Additionally, Toronto did not hold an early media session on Sunday. Any potential lineup changes will be revealed after coach Craig Berube addresses reporters in the mid-afternoon, but there is a chance that Dennis Hildeby will start in goal following Joseph Woll’s 22-save performance in Detroit.
