PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired infielder/outfielder Enmanuel Valdez from the Boston Red Sox on Sunday in exchange for minor league right-hander Joe Vogatsky.
Valdez, 25, posted a .214 batting average with six home runs and 28 RBIs in 65 games for the Red Sox last season, spanning four separate stints. He also played 50 games with Triple-A Worcester, hitting .233 with 11 home runs and 30 RBIs.
Valdez, a left-handed hitter, made his MLB debut on April 19, 2023, and was included on Boston’s opening-day roster for 2024. However, he was designated for assignment on Wednesday when the Red Sox acquired left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox.
Valdez originally signed with the Houston Astros in 2015 and was traded to Boston on August 1, 2022, along with outfielder Wilyer Abreu, in a deal for catcher Christian Vázquez.
Vogatsky, a 22-year-old right-hander, was selected by the Pirates in the 19th round of this year’s amateur draft out of James Madison University.
