Georgia Tech has received nearly 9,000 ticket requests for the 2024 Birmingham Bowl against Vanderbilt, the school’s athletics department announced on Friday morning.
These ticket requests were submitted during the request period, which closed at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, nearly tripling Georgia Tech’s initial allotment of 3,000 tickets. Fortunately, Tech has secured enough tickets from the Birmingham Bowl to fulfill all the requests made by that deadline. Seating will be assigned based on Alexander-Tharpe Fund Priority Points.
All tickets allocated through Georgia Tech are now officially SOLD OUT. For fans who missed the opportunity to request tickets through the university, a limited number are still available directly through the Birmingham Bowl at birminghambowl.com/tickets.
In an exciting matchup for the 2024 bowl season, Georgia Tech football accepted an invitation to face Vanderbilt in the 2024 Birmingham Bowl earlier this week. The game is set for Friday, Dec. 27, at Protective Stadium in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
This matchup will mark the 39th meeting between Georgia Tech (7-5, 5-3 ACC) and Vanderbilt (6-6, 3-5 SEC) and the first in postseason history. Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 20-15-3 and has not lost to Vanderbilt since 1941, holding a 12-0-1 record against them since 1948. The Yellow Jackets have won six consecutive games in the series since their last tie in 1965.
The two teams have faced each other four times since 2002, with Georgia Tech securing victories of 45-3 (2002 in Atlanta), 24-17 in overtime (2003 in Nashville), 56-31 (2009 in Nashville), and 38-7 (2016 in Atlanta).
Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt were rivals for 48 years, competing in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1916-21), the Southern Conference (1922-32), and the Southeastern Conference (1933-63). Their rivalry features a traveling trophy—a cowbell—that has been awarded to the victor since 1924, and Georgia Tech has held it since their 13-0 win over Vanderbilt in 1948.
This season, both teams are among 14 unranked programs that have defeated top-10 opponents, with the Yellow Jackets topping No. 10 Florida State on Aug. 24 and No. 4 Miami (Fla.) on Nov. 9, while the Commodores bested No. 1 Alabama on Oct. 5.
This bowl appearance will be Georgia Tech’s 47th, tying them for 15th all-time. The Yellow Jackets have a bowl game record of 26-20, with their 26 victories ranking 11th all-time and a winning percentage of .565 also placing them 11th among teams with at least 15 bowl wins.
This is the second consecutive year that Georgia Tech has sold out its bowl ticket allocation, having done the same for the previous year’s Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl at Raymond James Stadium, where they defeated UCF, 30-17.
