BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Ferris State University showed remarkable resilience and determination in a thrilling second-half comeback, defeating Slippery Rock University 48-38 and securing their spot in the NCAA Division II National Championship. This win marks Ferris State’s third appearance in the championship game in four years, as they strive for another title following their earlier successes.
With this victory, Ferris State improves to 13-1 for the season and will face Valdosta State University next Saturday. Although the Bulldogs faced difficulties in the first half, trailing 38-27 at halftime, they responded strongly in the second half, not allowing Slippery Rock to score.
Slippery Rock got off to a fast start, led by standout quarterback Brayden Long, who connected with Logan Ramper for three touchdown receptions, giving the Rock a 21-7 lead. Long completed 27 of 48 passes for 398 yards and three touchdowns but also threw four interceptions, two of which were critical as they occurred in the end zone, preventing potential scores.
Ferris State initially struggled offensively, but they found a breakthrough late in the second quarter when Justin Payoute returned an interception for a touchdown, leveling the game at 7-7. Despite this boost, the Bulldogs continued to face challenges against Slippery Rock’s potent passing game.
“This one will hurt for a long time,” reflected Slippery Rock coach Shawn Lutz after the game, lamenting his team’s missed opportunities. “If we score there and go up by 18 points, we likely win this game.” The playoffs were filled with shifting momentum after Slippery Rock established an early advantage.
Down 11 points entering the second half, Ferris State coach Tony Annese made strategic adjustments. “We’re just excited to be heading to Texas… I told them to treat it like a 0-0 game, even down by 11,” he explained afterward. This shift in mindset proved effective.
The Bulldogs dominated the second half, scoring three touchdowns to complete their comeback. A standout moment came from Kannon Katzer with a spectacular 69-yard touchdown run, followed by multiple rushing scores from Chambliss, including the game-winning touchdown with eight minutes left.
Ferris State’s defense tightened significantly, forcing four turnovers during the game, two of which occurred during critical moments when Slippery Rock was threatening to score. This was a crucial turning point for both teams, boosting Ferris State’s confidence while increasing the pressure on Slippery Rock due to missed opportunities.
Statistically, Ferris State showcased their offensive balance, totaling 513 yards, including 292 yards on the ground. Trinidad Chambliss led the Bulldogs, passing for 221 yards and scoring three rushing touchdowns, demonstrating his dual-threat capability.
While Slippery Rock posted 38 points, it was insufficient to withstand Ferris State’s resurgence in the second half. Their strong start was overshadowed by their inability to convert key touchdowns, particularly in the red zone after halftime.
Lutz commented on the team’s potential: “We showed we can compete with any team in the country. This loss stings, but we’ll return next year to give it another shot.” Slippery Rock has yet to reach the Division II Championship game, now falling to 0-4 in NCAA semifinal matchups.
With this victory, Ferris State rekindles hopes for another national title as they prepare for the championship match against Valdosta State. Will the Bulldogs secure another win, or will their opponents derail their chances? Fans eagerly await the outcome this coming Saturday.
