Extending Crochet should be a priority for Boston
When the Red Sox acquired Garrett Crochet, it was clear that Boston had further developments to handle with the talented left-hander.
The significant cost of the major trade with the Chicago White Sox was largely attributed to Crochet’s attractive circumstances. The 2024 All-Star will not celebrate his 26th birthday until late June and is under team control until the end of the 2026 season. However, the Red Sox likely see a longer-term future with Crochet, which will necessitate a contract extension to make that happen.
When might the standout southpaw and the Red Sox finalize a new contract? Peter Abraham from the Boston Globe offered some insights in a column released on Monday.
“Don’t be surprised if Garrett Crochet receives a contract extension before or shortly after spring training,” Abraham wrote. “The longer the Red Sox delay, the more likely the price will increase. The trade only makes sense if Crochet is secured for a longer term than the two years he has remaining before free agency.”
Last Friday, reporters asked Crochet about the possibility of an extension with the Red Sox, but he emphasized that he’s concentrating on his first season as Boston’s ace. Similarly, after the trade was completed, Craig Breslow tried not to think too far ahead, but the Red Sox chief baseball officer indicated that they would discuss extension talks “when the time is right.”
As Abraham pointed out, it would be wise for the Red Sox to consider prioritizing a Crochet extension as spring training approaches.
