The Detroit Tigers have remained relatively quiet this offseason, but they are reportedly in early-stage negotiations to secure a top first baseman, a move that could be key to their chances of contending next season. After a stunning second-half surge in 2024 that saw them end a lengthy playoff drought and even beat the Houston Astros in the American League Wild Card Round, the Tigers have become a team to watch. However, there are still areas that need improvement for them to take the next step. Upgrading first base is a priority, and the team is exploring free-agent options.
Currently, Spencer Torkelson, a former first-round pick, is projected to be the Tigers’ starting first baseman. While Torkelson showed power in 2023, hitting 31 home runs, his OPS was below .700, raising concerns about his overall performance. This has led the Tigers to consider bolstering the position with an established option. One name that makes a lot of sense for Detroit is Carlos Santana.
At 38 years old, Santana continues to defy age, delivering an impressive season in 2024 with the Minnesota Twins. He posted a .238 batting average with 23 home runs, 71 RBIs, 26 doubles, and won a Gold Glove at first base. Despite his age, Santana’s consistency and defensive prowess make him an ideal candidate to strengthen the Tigers’ lineup and provide stability at first base.
For the Tigers, Santana could be the perfect fit. As a veteran player with a strong track record, he would likely prefer joining a team with playoff aspirations, and Detroit, fresh off a surprising 2024 campaign, fits that description. Compared to other high-profile free-agent first basemen like Pete Alonso and Christian Walker, who are likely seeking multi-year deals, Santana could offer a shorter-term, win-now option for the Tigers. His presence in the middle of the order would help stabilize Detroit’s lineup, and Torkelson could potentially shift to designated hitter, giving him another opportunity to prove himself.
Although Santana may not be a long-term solution, his addition would provide a much-needed boost for the Tigers as they aim to contend in 2025. With his extensive experience in the American League Central, having played for various teams in the division, joining the Tigers seems like a natural fit for Santana at this stage in his career. A deal for Santana would be a strong, win-now move that could set the Tigers up for success in the coming season, offering both leadership and solid production at first base.
