Atlanta Braves Have Realistic Shot at Acquiring $7 Million, .830 OPS Star From New York Mets

The Atlanta Braves experienced a surprisingly challenging 2024 season, revealing several areas that need strengthening. One of the most pressing issues is at shortstop.

Orlando Arcia, the Braves’ 30-year-old shortstop, struggled last season with a .218/.271/.354 batting line, 17 home runs, and 46 RBIs. His performance barely registered above 0.0 WAR, contributing to below-average offensive output.

While it may be difficult to find a young, high-potential shortstop, the Braves could look for an affordable veteran option in free agency. New York Mets shortstop José Iglesias could be a strong candidate. In 2024, Iglesias posted impressive numbers, hitting .337/.381/.448 with 16 doubles in 85 games. Despite playing just half the season, he contributed 3.1 WAR for the Mets. At 35 years old by Opening Day 2025, Iglesias would likely be available at a reasonable cost, potentially signing a one- or two-year deal with an annual salary in the $5–10 million range.

The Braves now face a decision: take a chance on Arcia’s improvement in 2025 or make a smart move to add a key player from the Mets’ 2024 postseason roster. The opportunity is there, and it’s up to Atlanta to seize it.
