The All-Star has made the decision to walk away from baseball after an 11-year MLB career, as he shared in an interview with AJ Cassavell from MLB.com.
The first baseman and outfielder for the San Diego Padres clarified that while he doesn’t plan to “officially” retire, he made the choice to step back in June 2023 after being released by the Cincinnati Reds. At that point, Myers was also facing shoulder problems, which played a role in his decision.
“I had a fantastic career,” Myers said. “I loved what I did and made many wonderful friends. I have no regrets at all. If someone had told me when I was drafted that this would be my career, I would have jumped at the chance. I enjoyed every moment, and now I’m ready to start the next chapter of my life.”
After recently celebrating his 34th birthday, Myers retires having played 1,100 games from 2013 to 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays, Padres, and Reds. Over his 11 seasons in the majors, he achieved a batting line of .252/.326/.437 with 156 home runs in 4,290 plate appearances, resulting in a 107 wRC+.
Myers played eight seasons with the Padres, hitting 134 home runs, earning an All-Star Game start, and receiving some MVP consideration. He was a significant part of the Padres’ impressive transformation as a franchise.
His last MLB season was with the Reds in 2023. Although he didn’t return to San Diego, he intends to visit Petco Park in the future.
Now back in Charlotte, N.C., Myers lives with his wife, Maggie, and their 8-month-old son, Miller. He expressed a desire to remain involved in baseball in some way later on, though he isn’t certain what that might entail.
For the time being, Myers is enjoying his own version of retirement. Before the interview, he proudly shared that he had just completed his 250th round of golf in 2024.
“I’m not looking for a boss right now,” said Myers. “I love waking up, playing golf in the morning, and being a dad in the afternoon. I’ve established a great routine.”
