On Wednesday, Notre Dame secured a Christmas Day transfer commitment from former Arkansas tight end Ty Washington. The 6-foot-4, 247-pound player played three seasons with the Razorbacks and will join South Bend with two years of eligibility left. He appeared in 21 games and started four times over the past two seasons. Washington also attracted interest from South Florida, Liberty, and other programs.
With Mitchell Evans heading to the NFL and Kevin Bauman finishing his eligibility, Notre Dame was looking for a tight end to add some depth to the roster. Ty Washington will join Cooper Flanagan, Eli Raridon, Jack Larsen, and incoming freshman James Flanigan in vying for playing time in 2025.
A 3-star recruit from Georgia, Washington joined Arkansas as part of the 2022 class. During his freshman year, he played in five games and scored a touchdown on his only catch. In 2023, he participated in nine games, making 11 receptions for 170 yards and two touchdowns.
This past season, Washington played in seven games for Arkansas. However, in late October, following a game against Mississippi State, head coach Sam Pittman announced that Washington had been dismissed from the team for violating team rules. Shortly after, Washington appeared on the 4th and 5 Podcast with former Razorback tight end D.J. Williams, where he shared that he had been informed before the Mississippi State game that his grandmother was entering hospice care. When coaches asked him to play in the fourth quarter, he declined, stating he wasn’t in the right mindset for the game.
“If I could go back and change it, I would, but I can’t. All I can do now is move forward,” Washington said. “But I will always have love for Razorback nation, to be honest.”
For Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, Washington’s commitment wraps up a recruitment that began in 2021, when he was at Cincinnati and actively recruited Washington to join the Bearcats, even arranging an official visit.
