Not a Surprise-NFL insider speculates on Pittsburgh Steelers trading George Pickens

While the Pittsburgh Steelers might not have the highest-rated passing offense, George Pickens remains a key player for them when Russell Wilson or Justin Fields throw the ball. He tops the Steelers in targets, receptions, and receiving yards, even though he has missed three games.

Pickens has established himself as the clear number one receiver in the Steel City, showcasing his superstar potential. However, there are moments when his behavior suggests he has some diva tendencies typically associated with a WR1. Could these outbursts lead to discord in the locker room under Mike Tomlin’s leadership?

Mike Florio asks whether Pittsburgh Steelers would trade George Pickens

George Pickens, Pittsburgh Steelers

George Pickens’ talent is undeniable. Before his injury, he was among the top five in receiving yards for the season. Remember, he’s just 23 years old and in his third season, already boasting one 1,000-yard season. If he can achieve 50 yards in each of the next two games, he’ll end up with two 1,000-yard seasons.

However, he will enter the final year of his contract next season. Typically, for players with Pickens’ proven track record, teams initiate contract extension talks before the final year begins. Will the Steelers follow this trend, or will they instead seek another hidden gem in the draft, like they have repeatedly done with their receiving corps?

Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk recently raised the question of whether the Steelers might entertain trading their top wide receiver. He suggested that they could potentially replace him with a more budget-friendly player who wouldn’t bring any issues.

When Pickens interrupted the post-game interview of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce to share a couple of Christmas hugs, my first thought was that, despite not being able to defeat them, Pickens was signaling his desire to join their team.

Regardless of what unfolds, Pickens will be eligible for his second contract after the Steelers’ Week 18 game. He’s set to earn just $ 1.625 million in 2025, so he may be eager for a financial boost as soon as possible—potentially even before the wild-card round.

Additionally, he might be considering a change of scenery, and the Steelers could be ready to part ways with him as well.

To clarify, Florio isn’t suggesting that he has heard any trade rumors regarding Pickens from the Steelers; however, it’s likely that other teams will reach out about their top receiver. It only takes one irresistible offer, but the same could be true for negotiations regarding Pickens’s future contract as well.
