The Boston Red Sox have been active during the first two months of the offseason, making trades and signing free agents to improve their chances of competing in 2025 and beyond.
Although Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has addressed some of the team’s needs, more work remains. FanSided’s Katie Manganelli proposed that Breslow should collaborate with the Minnesota Twins to bring back catcher Christian Vazquez to Boston.
Vazquez, 34, was selected by the Red Sox in the ninth round of the 2008 MLB Draft from the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and High School. He made his debut with Boston in 2014 and played with the team through the 2022 season, contributing to the Red Sox’s 2018 World Series victory.
At the 2022 trade deadline, Vazquez was traded to the Houston Astros, where he helped them secure the World Series title.
Following the 2022 season, Vazquez signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Minnesota Twins, with 2025 set to be his final year under contract.
Vazquez played 93 games for the Twins last season, batting .221 with a .575 OPS, seven home runs, and 27 RBIs.
This offseason, Boston added a backup catcher for Connor Wong, acquiring Carlos Narvaez in a trade with the New York Yankees. Given the financial considerations, Narvaez, who has a career .231 batting average and .564 OPS over six MLB games, might prove to be a more cost-effective option.
