Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule recently expressed his worries about these practices, indicating that tampering may have influenced running back Dante Dowdell’s decision to leave for the Kentucky Wildcats.
Reflecting on Dowdell’s exit, Rhule praised the player while highlighting issues related to tampering.
“I have great respect for Dante, and he enjoyed his time here. He truly loved it here. I have only positive things to say about him. It was a long and challenging decision for him. Ultimately, he entered the portal to pursue an opportunity. These players are not just curious about what else is out there,” Rhule stated. “These are significant decisions being influenced by offers before they even enter the portal.
“It’s not merely a case of dissatisfaction prompting a departure; it’s more about, ‘I have this opportunity.’ The offers are substantial, making it tough for these young athletes. Once a player has been with me for even a day, they remain part of my journey for life. I care about Dante.”
Nebraska has been active in the transfer portal, acquiring important new talent for its roster. A notable recent addition is Kentucky wide receiver Dane Key, who decided to join the Huskers on Christmas Eve. However, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule has raised concerns about potential tampering related to the transfer of former Cornhusker running back Dowdell.
Dowdell entered the transfer portal on December 16, and just 24 hours later, it was reported that he had set up a visit with Kentucky. By December 20, Dowdell announced his commitment to the Wildcats. Rhule’s remarks imply that he suspects conversations between Dowdell and Kentucky may have taken place before his official entry into the portal, highlighting the challenges tampering presents in the rapidly changing landscape of college football transfers.
