The San Diego Padres are reportedly contemplating trading several of their star players this offseason, especially those with contracts nearing expiration. The team has built a roster filled with expensive talent, and the financial burden is beginning to impact the organization. A key player under consideration for a trade is ace Dylan Cease, who is anticipated to sign a $ 108 million contract when he hits free agency at the end of next season, according to Spotrac. Recently, Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer proposed that the Padres might trade Cease to the Baltimore Orioles this winter, suggesting a deal that would involve sending Cease to Baltimore in exchange for two promising prospects.

Here’s the suggested deal from Rymer which would have Cease joining the Orioles to replace Burnes:

Baltimore Orioles receive: RHP Dylan Cease.

San Diego Padres receive: OF Heston Kjerstad, OF Enrique Bradfield Jr. (No. 4 prospect)

“According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Orioles were interested in Cease even before the loss of Corbin Burnes to the D-backs,” Rymer noted. “With Burnes’ departure now confirmed, the need for a top ace in Baltimore’s starting rotation has become even more apparent. Since Cease is expected to reach free agency after 2025, the Orioles would be effectively making a similar move as they did with Burnes if they acquired him. ‘It could be an upgrade. While Burnes is declining as a strikeout pitcher, Cease ranked in the 92nd percentile for whiff rate this year. Although Baltimore’s farm system isn’t as strong as it once was, they still have more hitters than roster spots available. San Diego should be eager to tap into that talent.'”
