Insights per interview with ESPN as Lane Kiffin takes major jab at Diego Pavia, Kiffin responds at Pavia’s expense

During an ESPN interview with Taylor McGregor on Thursday night, Lane Kiffin made a playful remark about Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia.

In the interview, McGregor asked Kiffin about Jaxson Dart, who is set to play his final collegiate game. Dart, the all-time leading passer for Ole Miss, will finish his eligibility after the 2024 season.

Kiffin humorously suggested that Pavia might consider filing for a waiver for an extra year of eligibility, referencing his own recent waiver approval.

“He’s doing great,” Kiffin said of Dart. “You never know, maybe he’ll file a waiver and come back for another year.”

Last month, Pavia received an extra year of eligibility through an NCAA waiver. This waiver was granted following a lawsuit he filed, alleging that the NCAA was violating anti-trust laws by counting JUCO eligibility against a student athlete’s Division 1 eligibility.

Pavia is anticipated to return to Vanderbilt in 2025, although he has the option to enter the transfer portal and play for another team. If he remains with the Commodores, it is unlikely that he will face Lane Kiffin and the Rebels next season, as Vandy and Ole Miss are not scheduled to meet in the 2025 regular season.

Ole Miss finished the regular season with a record of 9-3 and did not make it into the College Football Playoff. A victory over Duke on Thursday night in the Gator Bowl would secure their third season with 10 or more wins in the past four years.
