The Indianapolis Colts could be gearing up for significant changes this offseason, particularly at the quarterback position. While it wouldn’t be surprising if they stick with Anthony Richardson heading into his third season, there’s a possibility they may seek a stronger competitor for the role.
According to CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin, the Colts might target a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback to challenge the former No. 4 overall pick. Benjamin suggested that the Colts could sign Derek Carr, currently with the New Orleans Saints, to a one-year, $15 million deal following his expected release this offseason.
Carr, who played through injuries in 2023 and only appeared in 10 games, has had an up-and-down career. As the Saints move forward with a new coaching staff, releasing Carr would save the team up to $30 million. Carr, approaching his 34th birthday, would bring a wealth of experience, although his performance has been inconsistent.
Signing Carr would be a major shift for the Colts offense. While Richardson remains a potential future star, adding Carr would bring in another veteran quarterback, something that could raise questions about Richardson’s immediate future. Though the $15 million deal wouldn’t guarantee Carr the starting job, it would send a clear message that the Colts are preparing for the possibility that Richardson may not be ready to lead the team long-term.
Despite Carr’s decent stats in recent seasons—40 touchdowns and 13 interceptions over the past two years—his ceiling might not be much higher than what the Colts have seen from previous quarterbacks. A move like this would be unexpected, especially if Chris Ballard stays on as the general manager, though with a new regime, anything is possible in the NFL.
