Indianapolis Colts Likely to Part Ways with Chris Ballard After Disappointing 2024-25 Season
The Indianapolis Colts are entering a pivotal offseason, with potential changes to their coaching staff on the horizon. Their playoff chances were dashed in Week 17 following a 45-33 defeat to the New York Giants, leading to discussions about the futures of general manager Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen.
Ballard, who has been with the team since 2017, has overseen a 61-69 record, with only two playoff appearances and no AFC South titles since 2014. Steichen, in his second year as head coach, may be allowed more time to develop the roster.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports, “The current expectation is that [Steichen] will stay in Indianapolis, but changes are likely coming. There are questions surrounding general manager Chris Ballard, and we’ll see how that unfolds.”
With the Colts’ 2023 No. 4 overall pick, Anthony Richardson, still developing due to injuries limiting him to just 15 games in his first two seasons, Steichen may be given the chance to continue mentoring the young quarterback as the team looks to re-establish itself in the AFC.
Despite a disappointing season under Steichen, the 39-year-old head coach remains optimistic about the team’s future and believes they can contend for a playoff spot next year.
“We’re really close,” Steichen said, as reported by Joel A. Erickson of the IndyStar. “It’s frustrating to have a season like this, but we’ve got a lot of great guys in the locker room. I know they’ll fight hard to finish strong.”
The Colts’ season concludes in Week 18 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, after which they face a crucial offseason in 2025.
