The Jacksonville Jaguars have parted ways with head coach Doug Pederson after three seasons, following a disappointing 4-13 finish to the 2024 season. The team’s season ended with a 26-23 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
In a statement, Jaguars owner Shad Khan shared the difficult decision to move on from Pederson. He acknowledged Pederson’s accomplishments and expressed his belief that the coach would continue to have a successful NFL career. Khan also stated his commitment to making decisions that best serve the team and its fans, who he feels are deserving of greater success. “The time to summon new leadership is now,” Khan said, emphasizing the need for a change in direction.
Despite the coaching change, Khan confirmed that general manager Trent Baalke would remain in his role. He expressed confidence that the team could return to a winning environment next season, and he plans to work closely with Baalke and others in the organization to find a new head coach who shares his vision.
Pederson, who replaced Urban Meyer following a tumultuous 2021 season, helped the Jaguars make significant strides. In his first season in 2022, Pederson led Jacksonville to a playoff appearance and orchestrated a remarkable comeback in the AFC wild-card round against the Los Angeles Chargers. The team also narrowly lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round.
While the Jaguars posted a 9-8 record in 2023, they missed the playoffs. The 2024 season saw setbacks, with injuries and missed opportunities leading to a rocky start, including an 0-4 record. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence also battled injuries, forcing backup Mac Jones to step in. The team struggled to find a rhythm and ultimately couldn’t recover.
