Michigan State football has announced the hiring of two new assistant coaches for head coach Jonathan Smith’s staff, including a defensive coach and a quarterbacks coach.
On Monday, the Spartans revealed that James Adams, formerly of Wake Forest, will join the team to coach safeties. He replaces Blue Adams (no relation), who will now take over the role of overseeing cornerbacks, previously held by Demetrice Martin. James Adams is a seasoned coach with 16 years of experience and a Wake Forest alum. He had been with Wake Forest since 2022, serving as the associate head coach and safeties coach last season. Adams has also coached at various institutions, including Purdue, Navy, Western Michigan, Charlotte, and Wofford.
Head coach Jonathan Smith expressed confidence in Adams, highlighting his extensive background coaching defensive backs and his leadership experience as an assistant and associate head coach.
In addition, Jon Boyer, who previously coached tight ends at Oregon State, will join Michigan State as the new quarterbacks coach. Boyer has deep knowledge of Smith’s offensive system, having worked closely with him at Oregon State. Boyer, who was with the Beavers for several years, previously served as their offensive coordinator and has a long history of developing quarterbacks. During his time at Oregon State, Boyer worked with notable quarterbacks like DJ Uiagalelei and Aidan Chiles, who will return as MSU’s starting quarterback in 2025.
These additions bring Smith’s coaching staff to 11 assistants, surpassing the previous limit of 10. The NCAA lifted restrictions in June, allowing for one more on-field coach, although only 10 assistants and the head coach can recruit off-campus.
