P.J. Fleck and the Minnesota Gophers concluded their 2024 season on a high note, securing a 24-10 victory against Virginia Tech in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. This win capped off a strong finish, and the Gophers ended the season with an 8-5 record.
Fleck has achieved an impressive 6-0 record in bowl games during his tenure at Minnesota, showcasing the consistent success of the program under his leadership. With the season now complete, it’s time to focus on the transfer portal, and Fleck and his team have been thriving, successfully recruiting players. However, today brought some disappointment as the Gophers lost two defenders to the portal.
Minnesota Gophers lose Coleman Bryson and Martin Owusu to the transfer portal
The Gophers received some challenging news today, but it honestly could have been worse. Defensive back Coleman Bryson and defensive tackle Martin Owusu have officially decided to enter the transfer portal.

Bryson Coleman was the standout MVP of the 2022 Pinstripe Bowl, recording seven tackles, breaking up a pass, and returning a 70-yard interception for a touchdown. However, with Koi Perich now emerging as a key player, Coleman’s involvement has diminished. Throughout his time with the Gophers, he has amassed 54 tackles and participated in 612 snaps. Coleman still has two years of eligibility remaining to make his impact in college football.
On the other hand, Martin Owusu has not made a significant impact during his time with the Gophers. The Prior Lake native redshirted in 2023 and has seen very limited action on the field.
Owusu, a 3-star recruit from Prior Lake High School, completed his graduation in 2023 and is finishing up his second season with the Gophers. After redshirting his first year, he participated in only one game this season against Rhode Island, where he made one tackle.
Overall, Owusu has been somewhat disappointing, and although Coleman had some promising moments, he was ultimately outperformed by Perich, who is simply too talented to be sidelined. It’s understandable for either player to consider exploring different opportunities.
