According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers are the most probable destinations for Alex Bregman. After spending his entire nine-season career with the Houston Astros, Bregman is expected to don a new uniform in the upcoming season. Although Jose Altuve advocated for Bregman’s return to Houston at the end of the 2024 season, the Astros signed first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million contract, signaling the likely end of Bregman’s tenure in Houston.
Before Walker’s signing, the Astros were among four teams reportedly in the running for Bregman, as per MLB’s Mark Feinsand last month. On December 11, Feinsand listed the Red Sox, Tigers, New York Yankees, and Astros as the main suitors for Bregman.
However, the contenders for the star third baseman now seem to have narrowed down. On Wednesday, Heyman confirmed that the Red Sox and Tigers are the “most likely” teams to land Bregman. Speaking on a Bleacher Report stream, Heyman explained that both teams had met with Bregman and emphasized the strong connections he has with his potential new managers—Alex Cora in Boston and A.J. Hinch in Detroit. “Both want him badly,” Heyman stated, noting that Bregman is highly regarded by both Cora and Hinch.
At 30 years old, Bregman had a solid 2024 season, highlighted by his first Gold Glove award. He finished the season with a .260/.315/.453 slash line, 26 home runs, and 75 RBIs.
