Ohio State quarterback Will Howard has become a key leader for the Buckeyes this season, guiding them to the College Football Playoff semifinals in his first year as the team’s starting QB after transferring from Kansas State. Throughout this journey, Howard has found comfort and motivation in a deeply meaningful pregame ritual—listening to voicemails from his late grandmother.

Howard shared that before each game, he listens to two voicemails his grandmother left him, a tradition he has maintained for the past three years. “Before every game, I listen to two voicemails that my late grandmother sent me,” he told ESPN’s Jen Lada. “It brings immense peace over me, especially this year for the playoffs—it probably motivated me even more.”

The first voicemail from his grandmother says, “Hiya Will, it’s Nana. Just want to wish you good luck. I’m rootin’ for you.” The second one offers more encouragement: “I just hope that everything works out well for you. Just go get ’em.”

Since adopting this ritual, Howard’s performance has flourished. In the 2024 season, he has achieved career-highs across nearly every category, throwing for 3,490 yards and 32 touchdowns. His leadership was pivotal in Ohio State’s CFP win over Tennessee and their impressive performance against No. 1 Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
