Negotiations between Tucker and the Cubs regarding his pre-arbitration salary revealed a notable gap, with Tucker seeking $17.5 million compared to the Cubs’ offer of $15 million, raising some concerns about the potential for a long-term deal.
The Cubs’ decision to trade veteran third baseman Isaac Paredes, versatile pitcher Hayden Wesneski, and prospect Cam Smith to acquire Tucker was a steep price to pay, particularly if they are unable to re-sign him and if Smith develops into a top player. However, the Cubs were confident in making this move because of their strong pipeline of young talent.
The Cubs currently have seven players ranked in the top 100 prospects, including infielder Matt Shaw, who is poised to compete for the starting third baseman role in Spring Training. At 23 years old, Shaw has impressed in the Minor Leagues and is seen as MLB-ready by Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report. Shaw, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2023 draft, had an impressive season, hitting .284/.379/.488 with 19 doubles, 21 home runs, 71 RBIs, and 31 steals across Double-A and Triple-A. He also stood out playing for Team USA in the WBSC Premier12 tournament during the offseason.
Despite his limited professional experience, Shaw is primed for an opportunity to prove himself at the Major League level. The Cubs wouldn’t have traded away Paredes without a plan to replace him, and they believe Shaw is ready for the challenge. Shaw will have every chance to claim the starting job for Opening Day and has the tools to succeed.
