Rookie quarterback Bo Nix had an exceptional debut season with the Denver Broncos, leading the team to its first NFL playoff appearance since 2015. The former Oregon Ducks star revitalized the franchise, providing the leadership under center that had been missing for years.
Nix’s rookie season was one of the most impressive in recent memory, as he exceeded expectations and outperformed many veteran quarterbacks in the league. He joined Robert Griffin III as the only rookie quarterbacks since 2000 to throw a passing touchdown on their opening drive of a playoff game. In the Broncos’ 31-7 Wild Card loss to the Buffalo Bills, Nix threw for 144 yards on 13-of-22 passing, rushed for 43 yards on four carries, and showcased his resilience.
Selected as the No. 12 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Nix’s performance surprised many, as some believed he was drafted too high after his 2023 Heisman Trophy finalist season at Oregon. With an expected win total of just 5.5 games, the Broncos finished the regular season at 10-7.
Drew Brees, speaking via DJ Siddiqi, noted that Nix’s growth was evident in his comfort with the play action and his ability to run the offense. This, combined with Denver’s strong defense, was key to their playoff push.
Nix also ended an eight-year playoff drought for Denver and set an NFL rookie record with 19 touchdown passes at home, surpassing Justin Herbert’s previous mark. Even more impressive was Nix’s resilience after suffering three vertebrae fractures in his lower back during a Week 12 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite the injury, he didn’t miss a snap and played through the pain.
Over his first 18 games, Nix passed for 3,775 yards (leading all rookies), 29 touchdowns (also first among rookies), and 12 interceptions (most among rookies). His completion rate stood at 66.3%, ranking third among rookies, and he posted a passer rating of 93.3.
Drew Brees, via DJ Siddiqi, highlighted that Nix’s playbook expanded significantly as the season progressed, allowing him to operate at a high level.
On top of his passing numbers, Nix also rushed for 430 yards and four touchdowns, and even caught a touchdown pass during a 41-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Looking ahead, Denver holds the 20th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, which could be used to add more offensive weapons to support Nix’s continued development.
