The Cowboys have officially announced Mike Gundy’s staff
STILLWATER, Okla. (KSWO) – Following a historically disappointing 3-9 football season, the OSU Cowboys opted to overhaul most of their coaching staff. The official announcement for the 2025 coaching lineup was made on Wednesday, January 15.
Entering the 2024 season with a ranking of 17th in the AP college poll, the Cowboys initially thrived, winning their first three games and pushing their ranking up to 13th. However, they then experienced a shocking downward spiral, suffering a nine-game losing streak.
Was the coaching staff to blame, as some fans suggested?
Offensively, the Cowboys struggled significantly during their losing streak, averaging only 22 points per game, which likely contributed to the dismissal of the entire offensive team.
Oklahoma State has since overhauled its offensive staff, selecting a new offensive coordinator all the way down to the offensive line coach. Doug Meacham, the new offensive coordinator and inside receivers coach, is familiar with Stillwater; he played offensive line for the Cowboys from 1983 to 1987 and previously worked with tight ends and inside receivers on Oklahoma State’s staff from 2005 to 2012.
Meacham enjoyed a successful debut year at TCU in 2014, earning recognition as a finalist for the Broyles Award.
A common adage among fans and coaches is that “defense wins games.” Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they surrendered an average of 36 points per game during their losing streak, prompting changes on the defensive side as well.
Todd Grantham, who has served as defensive coordinator in both college football and the NFL, will now lead the defense this year. Grantham brings experience from his time as an analyst under the legendary Nick Saban in 2022 when Alabama reached the National Championship game.
He also had a successful tenure at the University of Florida, where the Gators ranked in the nation’s top 11 for takeaways during his first three years, totaling 65.
It appears the theme for the upcoming season is a complete reset, as the Cowboys have revamped their entire coaching staff under Mike Gundy in hopes of a more successful season ahead.
However, with the arrival of new coaches comes the introduction of fresh philosophies, schemes, playbooks, and approaches.
