Fresno State Football announced the hiring of former Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz on Wednesday, with plans for him to coach the Bulldog tight ends under first-year head coach Matt Entz. Ferentz was an offensive analyst at Maryland last season but parted ways with Iowa after a challenging seven-year run as the offensive coordinator.
He previously served as the tight ends coach for the New England Patriots from 2011 to 2012, where he worked with notable players like Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. During his stint as Iowa’s offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021, Ferentz coached tight ends, helping T.J. Hockenson win the Mackey Award for the best player at the position in 2018, and saw players like Noah Fant get selected in the first round of the NFL draft, as well as Sam LaPorta making strides in the league.
Fresno State hired Entz in December after his tenure as the assistant head coach at USC; before that, he led North Dakota State to two FCS national championships as head coach. Both Ferentz and Entz have connections to current Bison head coach Tim Polasek. Brian Ferentz, who graduated from the University of Iowa and attended Iowa City High School, is the son of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz.
