The New York Mets are reportedly planning a significant change for young infielder Mark Vientos in 2025. After a breakout year in 2024, Vientos is expected to transition to first base, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. This move comes after the Mets seemingly chose not to re-sign Pete Alonso during free agency.
Negotiations between Alonso and the Mets fell apart earlier this week. The current strategy is to move Vientos to first base while Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio compete for the third base position.
Vientos, 25, played a key role in the Mets’ strong performance last season, hitting .266 with 27 home runs and 71 RBIs, along with an .838 OPS. His contributions were vital in helping the team reach the NLCS. A second-round pick by the Mets in 2017, Vientos made his debut in 2022 and has accumulated 37 career home runs and 96 RBIs. He aims to continue improving this season, particularly as he teams up with Juan Soto, who joined the Mets on a 15-year, $765 million contract, making him the highest-paid athlete in American sports history.
With a competitive National League, including strong teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, and Atlanta Braves, the Mets will face tough competition in 2025. Last season, the Mets were eliminated by the Dodgers in the NLCS.
