3 Hitting Prospects Poised for Breakout Seasons with D-backs in 2025
As the Arizona Diamondbacks’ minor league system continues to grow, several key players are on the verge of breaking out. Among the many talented hitters in their system, three prospects appear ready to make a significant leap in 2025 and rise up the organizational rankings.
The D-backs’ system is particularly stacked with hitters, with 24 of their top 40 prospects being position players, including eight in the top 10. While identifying the top breakout candidates can be challenging, here are three hitters expected to take major steps forward next season.
No. 8 Prospect, RHB, Infielder Tommy Troy, Age 23
Troy enters the 2025 season with the potential to regain the promise he showed when drafted 12th overall a few years ago. After an injury-plagued 2024, Troy ended the High-A season strong and impressed in the Arizona Fall League (AFL). Despite struggling early on, he finished the AFL with a .290/.380/.484 line, hitting seven doubles, a triple, and three homers. With little left to prove in High-A, Troy is set to begin the season in Double-A, where the more hitter-friendly environment should allow him to further develop his power. If he can prove he can handle breaking pitches and stay healthy, Troy could push for a spot in Triple-A by season’s end.
No. 14 Prospect, RHB, Infielder Cristofer Torin, Age 20
Torin faced consistency issues in 2024 but demonstrated impressive plate discipline, finishing with 81 walks in 108 games and just 16.4% strikeouts. His end-of-season performance—.297/.414/.407 over his final 31 games—showed significant improvement and hints at a potential breakout in 2025. Torin will likely start the season at High-A Hillsboro, where his contact skills could shine in a league that limits power but rewards solid contact. If he can improve his line drive rate, Torin’s combination of contact ability, speed, and plate discipline could lead to a strong 2025 campaign.
No. 19 Prospect, RHB, Infielder Yassel Soler, Age 19
Soler had an impressive 2024 season in the Arizona Complex League (ACL), posting a .303 average and an .824 OPS. He showed the potential to be a power-hitting third baseman but still needs to unlock his full offensive potential, especially against right-handed pitching. Soler excelled against lefties, slugging .510 with a .910 OPS. Moving up to Single-A Visalia, Soler’s challenge will be to reduce his high ground ball rate (50%) and start tapping into his pull-side power more consistently. If he can improve his plate patience and continue to develop his power, Soler could have a breakout year, boosting both his rankings and his future in the system.
Honorable Mentions
Second baseman Demetrio Crisantes, who had a breakout season in 2024, could see even greater success next year as he aims for a top-100 prospect ranking. Outfielder Druw Jones, who is reworking his swing this offseason, could also make significant strides if his adjustments pay off.
