LeVert has emerged as a potential trade candidate. But does moving him make sense for the Cavaliers?
Why Trade Caris LeVert?
Let’s start with LeVert’s on-court contributions. He is having one of his most efficient seasons, averaging 10.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.8 assists, while shooting 47.2% from the field and 42.0% from beyond the arc. LeVert is also having one of his better defensive seasons, with a defensive rating of 113. He is a legitimate contender for Sixth Man of the Year.
Given LeVert’s solid performance, why would the Cavaliers consider trading him?
The main reason is his expiring contract. LeVert could seek a significant payday this offseason, and the Cavaliers are already facing a salary crunch due to upcoming extensions for Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley. It seems unlikely the Cavaliers would be able to re-sign him this summer. Trading LeVert now would allow them to get something in return before he leaves for another team.
Additionally, trading LeVert could help Cleveland avoid the luxury tax and reduce future financial penalties, as he is owed $16.6 million this season.
The Verdict
Should the Cavaliers trade LeVert? The answer isn’t clear-cut.
If they can secure a trade package that brings in a clear upgrade over LeVert—such as a player like Cameron Johnson—then moving LeVert makes sense. However, if the trade is solely to reduce payroll, it might not be the best move.
The Cavaliers are one of the few teams with a legitimate shot at the Finals this season, and LeVert has been an important part of that. Trading him just for financial reasons would not be the optimal approach to maximizing their championship window this year.
